Translate PSP text from Japanese to English with VNR!

Don't doubt your eyes, folks.
It's true, and i have proof it~ XD
So to commerate it with myself, i'll make a tutorial about it~

Long-long ago, staring at otome game list sometimes made my eye hurts, a lot!
How can i not?
Some titles looks so great and interesting plot, all go to ruins with label [PSP] <- THIS!
No longer to brood over that now, nyahahaha~
I keep giggling at myself, imagining so many PSP games out there. Human has finally crawled out and found their way to conquer J-VN for PSP!
Thanks a lot to Jichi-sama who was the founder of this. Also to Sakimichi-sama who enlightened me with her guide.
Xie-xie, Merci, Gracias, Arigatou, and many more (ask Google or Bing for more) XP.

Let's start!

STEP 1 - Prepare the necessity
  • And remember to have a J-VN for PSP in your PC too. -normally it has .iso extension-
  • Un-zip VNR with 7-Zip and un-rar for PPSSPP. -i don't need to teach this, right?-

STEP 2 - Setting for PSP Emulator
  • It was a hassle because different settings has to be applied to different games. But oh well, for the sake of gaming, no pain no gain! XD
  • The following setting is for Arabians Lost: The Engagement on Desert (JPN) VN. As for other VN setting, google around or experiment with it by yourself~
  • Use PPSSPPWindows.exe, not PPSSPPWindows64.exe. I don't know why, but because Sakimichi-sama mention that it wouldn't work, so i didn't bother to tried it.. yet. x)
  • If PPSSPP is 'Run as Administrator', you should do the same for VNR later.
  • Find setting for your emulator. -see that orange crayon?-
  • Here's my setting. -leave it uncheck on what i didn't mention below-
    GRAPHICS
    Rendering Mode
    ModeNon-buffered rendering (speedhack)
    Framerate control
      FrameskippingOff
    Alternative speedunlimited
    Features
    Postprocessing shaderOff
    Performance
    Rendering resolutionAuto(1:1)
    Lazy texture caching (speedup)
    Retain change textures (speedup)
    Disable slower effects (speedup)
    Spline/Bezier curves quality Low
    Texture scalling
    Upscale level Off
    Upscale typexBRZ
    Texture filtering
    Anisotropic filteringOff
    Texture filteringAuto
    Hack settings (may cause glitches)
    Disable alpha test (speedup)
    Texture coord speedhack (speedup)
    Overlay information
    Show FPS counterNone
    AUDIO
    Audio
    SFX volume8
     BGM volume8
    Enable Sound
    Audio latencyHigh
    Audio hacks
Sound speed hack (Dead or Alive, etc)
    SYSTEM
    Emulation
    Fast memory (unstable)
    Developer tools
    Dynarec (JIT)
    PSP settings
    PSP modelPSP-2000/3000
  • And load your PSP games. Play until you can see some text, like this.

STEP 3 - Time for Visual Novel Reader to shine!
  • Run Visual Novel Reader, exe at your VNR folder. -might as well update it before playing, but its up to you-
  • Now you can see mouse arrow changing shape to cool blue-ish colour, that's the sign VNR starts to work. Here's what it looks like. Let's proceed to game wizard. -click at orange crayon-
  • After clicking at that search logo / game wizard, you'll see something like this. -continue click on 'next' with orange crayon-
  • After that, three options will appear. Since i've run the game from the start, i'll choose option '2 - Process of the running game'.
  • Now you'll see the process that has been working. Choose the PPSSPP.exe and proceed forward. If PPSSPP.exe didn't appear, try refresh it.
  • Game information bla-bla-blah.. Ok, NEXT!
  • Something about 'Successfully synchronized with game => PPSSPPWindows.exe', Next!
  • Next one is 'Searching game setting online'. But i'm not online right now and it doesn't seems important to me at the moment, so next~! -if you're online and this part is successful, skip these points below and go to Step 4.
  • Warning! From this part will be important, make sure to follow it right! Like what has been underline in picture with orange crayon, play the game a bit.
  • Something did appear, a lot! But, all of them is ~_~ no good.. Like this one.
  • If an option (right now is SHIFT+JIS) doesn't give a good result, try another one until it looks the same as the text from the game. Like, UTF-16 or UTF-8. Fortunately i found a similar text threads at UTF-16, and 'Commit'.
  • Some VN might didn't need these bothersome method since it already has its own hook-code, You can insert it in that blank field then save from there.
  • Now you can relax for a while. X)
  • Then try playing the game again. The final result is here! Hip, hip.. Hurray~!

STEP 4 - Hook VNR to Translation Agregator~
  • It's easy!
Did you ever get this when you hover to center right side (<) of ppsspp?
  • To hook it into TA, you only need to set it 'Text into Clipboard' just like how it was at AGTH/ ITH at Option. -other options is something i set to avoid using internet or important things only~
  • Try press forward to see the result. Did you satisfied with it? ^^
One more things to mention, if you only want translation to appear at TA, try uncheck 'Game Text' and 'Machine translation' at Options. You can see the results like above.

Great, tutorial finished~ I'm satisfied now =P.
To tell the truth, my child...
This isn't the end!
This is a start of the fierce battle in this century.
-wanna be dramatic for a moment, o' silly me. XD-
Look at those translations, someone gotta repair those fearsome machine-english.

See ya at the next post~  (^_^) /
